Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders: Highlights from REYA’s First Youth Leadership Program

At Rescue Youth Alliance (REYA), we are thrilled to reflect on the immense success of our First Youth Leadership Program, which brought together passionate young minds eager to learn, grow, and become the leaders of tomorrow. Over the course of two days, we had the privilege of hearing from an outstanding lineup of experienced speakers who shared their expertise and insights on a wide range of topics critical to youth leadership, community development, and national progress.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our esteemed speakers, who brought valuable knowledge, diverse perspectives, and real-world experiences to the table. Their contributions made this program a truly enriching experience for all involved. We also want to recognize the enthusiastic participation of all the attendees, whose energy and commitment made this event a huge success.

Here’s a look back at the impactful sessions and thought-provoking discussions that took place during our two-day youth leadership program:

1. Mr. Flomo Mau F. Maiwo – Founder, Diplomatic Development Initiative

Topic: Challenges Faced by Liberia’s Educational System: Case Studies from Rural Areas – Challenges and Solutions

Mr. Maiwo kicked off the program with a thought-provoking presentation on the issues plaguing Liberia’s educational system, particularly in rural areas. He highlighted critical challenges such as limited resources, inadequate infrastructure, and the lack of access to quality education for many students in remote regions. He also offered practical solutions, encouraging young leaders to advocate for educational reform and participate in creating systems that make education more accessible and equitable for all.

2. Ms. Rosetta Fardolo – Fellow, Kofi Annan Institute for Peace and Conflict/Student Leadership

Topic: Gender Equality, Equity, and Democracy: Should Women Be Promoted and Trained for Jobs Even If Not Initially Accepted?

Ms. Fardolo led a compelling discussion on the importance of gender equality and equity in leadership. She challenged participants to think critically about women’s roles in leadership and why it is essential to promote and train women for jobs and leadership positions, even when they may not be widely accepted or given the same opportunities as their male counterparts. Her session sparked important conversations about breaking gender barriers, empowering women, and creating inclusive leadership spaces.

3. Mr. Joseph M.D. Johnson – Youth Development Consultant, Ministry of Youth & Sports, Republic of Liberia

Topic: Why is Volunteering Important? Planning and Defining SMART Goals

Mr. Johnson emphasized the significance of volunteering as a pathway to leadership and personal growth. He guided participants through the process of setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals, explaining how volunteering can provide valuable experience and help young people define their own paths toward leadership. He encouraged the youth to engage in volunteerism, not just for community service, but as a strategic way to develop key leadership skills and build networks.

4. Mr. Varfee Holmes – Communications Manager, Liberia Revenue Authority

Topic: Investing in Youth to Empower Our Future Preparedness and Resilience

In a dynamic session, Mr. Holmes spoke about the importance of investing in youth to ensure Liberia’s future preparedness and resilience. He discussed how young leaders must be equipped with the right tools and opportunities to face the challenges of tomorrow, including economic instability, climate change, and technological disruption. His presentation highlighted the need for youth-driven solutions and the role of young people in shaping Liberia’s future.

5. Ms. Faith Brunilda Blapooh – Founder & CEO, Joy Givers Foundation

Topic: The Main Causes of Climate Change in Liberia: Policies and Best Practices for Improvement

Ms. Blapooh brought attention to one of Liberia’s most pressing challenges—climate change. She spoke about the environmental issues facing the country, including deforestation, pollution, and unsustainable agricultural practices. She also shared policy recommendations and best practices for addressing climate change, urging young leaders to advocate for sustainable practices and work toward environmental conservation. Her session sparked discussions on how youth can play an active role in protecting Liberia’s environment.

6. Mr. Jarius Andrew Greaves – Founder & CEO, YONER Liberia

Topic: Roles, Qualities, and Characteristics of Leaders: Entrepreneurial and Technological Skills for Youth Development in Liberia

Mr. Greaves rounded off the program with an empowering session on the roles, qualities, and characteristics of effective leaders. He highlighted the importance of entrepreneurial skills, innovation, and technological literacy in today’s fast-paced world. Mr. Greaves encouraged the youth to develop a mindset that embraces entrepreneurship, digital literacy, and technological innovation as key drivers of leadership and national development. His session resonated with young attendees eager to explore new ways to contribute to Liberia’s growth.
