21 Years of Peace Celebrated

Monrovia, Liberia – September 21, 2024

In a powerful demonstration of unity and commitment, over 500 young Liberians gathered in Monrovia to celebrate 21 years of peace in Liberia by participating in the Run4Peace event, organized by the African Youth Fellowship (AYF) Liberia in partnership with Rescue Youth Alliance (REYA). Despite heavy rain, the passionate turnout was a testament to the unwavering dedication of Liberia’s youth to peace and national development.

The event, which was held on International Day of Peace, carried the theme “Cultivating a Culture of Peace,” and emphasized the critical role peace plays in driving Liberia’s economic prosperity and long-term development. The day’s activities kicked off with a symbolic run from the Ministerial Complex in Congo Town to Invincible Sports Park in Monrovia, representing the resilience and continued commitment of Liberia’s youth to maintain peace and contribute to the country’s progress.

Moses Buwee, Executive Director of AYF Liberia, addressed the participants, commending the large turnout and emphasizing the vital role peace plays in creating a stable environment that attracts investment and fosters economic growth. He called on Liberian politicians to prioritize the nation’s welfare, noting that sustainable development can only be achieved through lasting peace and stability.

“Peace is essential not only for development but also for attracting international partners who can help take Liberia’s economy to new heights,” Buwee stated.

Sylvester Choloplay, Founder of Rescue Youth Alliance (REYA) and a well-known Liberian journalist, also spoke passionately about the significance of peace for Liberia’s future. As a long-time advocate for youth-led peace initiatives, Choloplay highlighted how Liberia’s 21 years of peace since the end of the civil war have been crucial to the country’s recovery and rebuilding efforts.

“Peace is not just the absence of conflict; it is the bedrock of economic growth, national unity, and social cohesion,” Choloplay remarked. “Over two decades of peace have laid the foundation for progress, and it is our duty, as the youth of this nation, to protect and strengthen that foundation.”

Under Choloplay’s leadership, REYA has been instrumental in promoting youth engagement in peaceful dialogue, educational programs, and leadership initiatives. His call to action for young people to continue being champions of peace resonated deeply with the crowd.

Also speaking at the event, James A. Yekeh, Vice President of REYA, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that peace is a collective responsibility. He encouraged Liberian youth to take ownership of the country’s future by engaging in activities that promote national development and unity.

“We cannot afford to take peace for granted,” Yekeh said. “Every effort counts—whether through entrepreneurship, community leadership, or educational initiatives. We must continue building Liberia’s future on the solid foundation of peace.”

Lawrence Yealue, Country Director of Accountability Lab Liberia, urged the youth to channel their energy into productive endeavors that benefit the nation, such as entrepreneurship and motivational leadership. He reminded them that avoiding political conflict and working towards unity and progress would be key to unlocking Liberia’s potential.

Other partners, including the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa, Ultimate Fitness, and Bong TV, played a significant role in promoting the event’s core message of peace, unity, and progress for Liberia. Together, these organizations work to foster a culture of peace that can drive the country towards economic prosperity.

The Run4Peace event concluded with a competitive spirit as the winners of the race were announced. Festus M. Boaywe emerged as the first male winner, while Korpo Sheriff claimed victory as the first female winner. Gladys D. McGill secured second place, with all winners receiving awards for their participation in this historic celebration of peace.

As Liberia continues to grow and develop, the participation of its youth in promoting peace and stability remains essential. The Run4Peace was a reminder that Liberia’s future is in the hands of its young people, and by nurturing a culture of peace, the nation can build a prosperous and united future for all.
